Settings
The four settings the VS Code extension reads, their defaults, and what changes when you turn each one off.
Open them with Preferences: Open Settings (UI) and search for DebugAI, or edit settings.json directly. They work the same in Cursor, Windsurf and VSCodium.
| Setting | Type | Default | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
debugai.apiKey | string | "" | application |
debugai.autoIndex | boolean | true | default (window) |
debugai.showWelcome | boolean | true | default (window) |
debugai.showAnnouncements | boolean | true | application |
An application setting is one value for the whole editor, set in your user settings. The other two use VS Code's default scope, so a project can override them in its own .vscode/settings.json.
debugai.apiKey
Your DebugAI key, if you would rather paste one than sign in. You almost never need it: DebugAI: Sign In stores the key in VS Code's secret storage, which is encrypted and never written to settings.json.
A key that starts with dbg_ pasted into this setting is moved into secret storage the first time DebugAI uses it, and the setting is cleared. Until then it sits in settings.json as plain text, so do not paste a key here in a settings file you commit or sync.
Your key is on the dashboard, under Settings. To replace or remove it, run DebugAI: Set API Key or DebugAI: Clear API Key.
debugai.autoIndex
With it on, DebugAI indexes the open project once when VS Code starts with you signed in, and again for each file you open or save. Each file sends its text to DebugAI's servers, up to 50 KB per file and up to 500 files per run. The free plan keeps 200 files per project. .env files and key files are never sent.
Turn it off and nothing is indexed until you run DebugAI: Index Entire Workspace or DebugAI: Index Current File yourself. One exception: a Proactive Scan indexes the files it picks before it reads them, whatever this setting says.
The first time DebugAI indexes on its own, it says so in a notice with a Turn off auto-index button. That button sets this setting to false for your user settings.
debugai.showWelcome
After the first index of a new project, DebugAI opens a one-time panel that lists the files it stored and offers a Proactive Scan. Set this to false to skip the panel. Indexing still runs.
debugai.showAnnouncements
Shows DebugAI product notices in the editor: new features, beta access you were granted, and service notices. Set it to false to hide them. The dashboard keeps showing them either way.
Example
{
"debugai.autoIndex": true,
"debugai.showWelcome": false,
"debugai.showAnnouncements": true
}To stop automatic indexing in one project only, put this in that project's .vscode/settings.json:
{
"debugai.autoIndex": false
