Cursor, Windsurf, VSCodium
Install DebugAI from Open VSX in a VS Code fork, then sign in, index and debug exactly as in VS Code.
Cursor, Windsurf and VSCodium install extensions from Open VSX, not the VS Code Marketplace. DebugAI is published on both, so everything after the install works the same as in VS Code.
DebugAI needs an editor built on VS Code 1.101 or later. If it will not install, update the editor first.
Install from Open VSX
In your editor, open the extensions panel, search for DebugAI and install it. Or open DebugAI on Open VSX.
When it is installed, the status bar reads DebugAI: Get Free Key and a notice offers to sign you in.
Sign in
Open the Command Palette (Ctrl Shift P, or Cmd Shift P on a Mac) and run DebugAI: Sign In. Your browser opens on debugai.io with a short code that is already on your clipboard. Sign in or create a free account, check the code, and press Connect it.
The editor shows DebugAI connected (free, 10/day).
Signed in on the website already? The dashboard has a Connect button with a chip for Cursor, Windsurf and VSCodium. It opens your editor with the key filled in.
Index your project
Press Index workspace on the DebugAI connected message, or run DebugAI: Index Entire Workspace. After this first time, DebugAI indexes on its own each time the editor starts. Index your project explains what is sent and what never is.
Debug an error
Run the failing command in the editor's terminal, right-click inside the terminal and pick DebugAI: Analyze Terminal Error. For an error in a file, select it and press Ctrl Alt D (Cmd Alt D on a Mac).
You'll know it worked when
A DebugAI panel opens with a Root Cause that names a file and a line in your project, and ranked fixes under it.
Apply a fix
Press Preview & Apply Fix, read the diff, then press Apply. Undo stays on the card for 30 seconds. The VS Code quickstart shows every step of this in detail, and it is the same here.
Your editor's agent can use DebugAI too
The extension gives you editor commands. Cursor's and Windsurf's own agents reach DebugAI through its MCP server, which is a separate, one-command setup:
